Birds of the Bahamas

I love to watch birds in the Bahamas. They always seam to be serene and calm gliding effortlessly on unseen wind currents or patiently watching and waiting for a meal to present itself to them. Enjoy these photos and appreciate the serenity of their environment.

These first 2 pictures of a great white egret hunting were taken in Cherokee Sound, Abaco.

I am still not sure what kind of birds are in this photo. They were very focused on hunting in the shallow water near where I was bone fishing in the "Bight of Old Robinson" near Little Harbour, Abaco. Let me know if you can identify them for me!

This Bahamas high flier is a Frigate bird. I have followed frigates for many hours while deep sea fishing in the ocean. They are the look-outs in the sky constantly scanning the surface of the ocean from several hundred yards up for bait fish to eat. These are the same small bait fish that the tuna, bullnose dolphin and marlin eat, so when you can find the bait fish you almost always find the bigger fish that you are trying to catch.

I have watched sandpipers running up and down the beach as if they are afraid to get their feet wet many hours while beach combing or swimming on Bookies Beach near my house in Little Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas where this picture was taken.

This beauty is a white crowned night heron. They hunt at night creeping around in the dark looking for crabs or lizards and have the ability to scare the living daylights out of anyone who accidentally comes upon one while walking in the yard, on a road or trail in the dark by screaming an ungodly "Wraaaaaaaaccckkk".

I took these pictures from my deck of this heron hunting very patiently in my front yard.

This small predator was one of a pair that was nesting in a coconut tree near my house. I was told it is a peregrine falcon but am not positive that is true. He would sit very stoically watching the yard for some movement and then swoop down on an unsuspecting meal like a stealth bomber.

This white egret was hunting at low tide right in front of the village of Cherokee Sound.I sat and watched him for a long time and took many photos of him that day.

Seagulls can either be praised for their soaring acrobatic beauty or hated for their nasty habit of crapping on everything around or near them. Yes, I have been shit on by sea gulls but still admire their perseverance and tenacity.

These photos were taken one evening in Sandy Point, Abaco while I was having an ice cold beer and enjoying the sunset with some friends.
