Abaco has become one of the most visited islands in the Bahamas with many resorts, hotels and vacation rental homes. Abaco Sound is one of the safest and most beautiful bodies of water for boating enthusiasts in all the Bahamas. One of the best ways to get to Abaco is to either fly or drive to Ft. Lauderdale and take a commuter flight to the islands. A new company, Locair, now flies to Abaco and other Family Islands from Ft. Lauderdale. They depart from the Private plane terminal on the west end of the airport. This is very nice as you do not have all the TSA security as in the big terminals. They also allow 70 lbs luggage free and $1 per pound above that. I recently took one of their flights to Marsh Harbour and had a generator and hot water heater as baggage! They fly a great plane called a Fairchild Metroliner that seats 10 and can also carry a ton of freight. I have flown on Calypso many times and is one of the best of the commuter airlines. Lauderdale Yellow Air Taxi is located in the Private Jet Terminal on the west side of the airport. This is very nice because you do not have to go through all the TSA security.
